On 3 rd March 2013 it will be exactly 247 years ago that Jan Willem Barkhuysen set foot on the shores of Table Bay in 1766. (Although he was baptised in Germany as Johan Nicolaus Wilhelm Barckhausen he always signed his name as Jan Willem Barkhuysen. )

Die nasate van Jacobus Johannes Barkhuizen van Hartbeespan, Amalia het al twee feeste gehad maar hierdie is die eerste nasionale fees. Daarom is dit Fees 247.

Almal wat wil assosieer met die Barkhuizen/Barkhuysen/Barkhuisen/(van) Barkenhuizen familie is welkom.

With Barkhuizen Festival 247 we want to delve into our past and be reminded of our ancestors and give thanks to those who carved the way through the wild Cape of 1760’s to where we as descendants stand in 2013.

The hamlet of Herold, at the upper end of the scenic Montagu Pass, is in South Africa's Western Cape province. The towns of Oudtshoorn and George are both only half an hour's drive away which makes it an ideal venue location for our Festival . It is also a great base from which to explore the many wonders of the popular Garden Route and Little Karoo.

The Area

Located close to the Montagu Pass through the Outeniqua Mountains , it is an area of spectacular natural beauty with some of the most scenic routes in South Africa . The Montagu Pass , named after John Montagu who was passionate about the need for good roads, was constructed in 1847 to replace the Cradock Kloof, which had become inadequate for the volume of traffic. When the new pass opened, travelers had to pay for the privilege of using it. The old tollhouse can still been seen at the foot of the pass.

Herold may be small and somewhat tucked away but don't be misled, there is plenty to see and do in the area. Because of it's diversity it has a magic all of it's own. There is something that will appeal to everyone's taste, which makes it an ideal place for the whole family. The region has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, abundant unique flora and bird life. Experienced best by following some of the many trails - whether by foot or on wheels, the choice is yours. There are hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and 4x4 trails all in close proximity or you can take the Outeniqua Power Van excursion - a 3-hour trip into the Outeniqua Mountains along the old railway tracks. Wine tasting and vineyard tours are available at Herold Wines.

Herold is a small town tucked away at the end of the beautiful Montagu Pass near George. The construction of the Montagu Pass in 1847 put Herold on the map. The new pass was built to replace the old Craddock Pass , cutting the traveling time to George drastically. As a result of this the small town of Herold grew rapidly as travelers needed services nd a place to stay. Herold continued to be busy into the 1950's. But due to the opening of the Outeniqua Pass in 1958 this small town's fortunes changed - traffic through the Montagu pass diminished and by the early 1960's Herold had become almost a ghost town. It remained a small farming community that continued their fruit farming activities during the 1970's & 80's until the 1981 Laingsburg floods. These devastating floods destroyed nearly 17000 trees, creating the need for an alternative crop. The climate of the area provided an answer - a crop not usually associated with South Africa - hops.

Die reëlingskomitee het die bedrag op R100 per volwassene vasgestel. Dit sluit 'n middagete en die huur van die kerksaal en eetgerei in. Ons het besluit dat elke feesganger die oggend van die fees registreer en die bedrag vir die ete betaal.

BARKHUYSEN - ASSOCIATION/FAMILIEBOND

Een van ons doelwitte met die fees is om ‘n formele Familiebond te stig. Tans tree vrywilligers Johan, Wilkie Mariette, Anthony en Gordon op as Familiebond.
The objectives of a family association can have wide ranging purposes. A primary objective would be to have family information on record and be available for future generations. For this purpose there will need to be structured and sustained research. Together with the collection of information the necessary funds need to be available for the organisation and publication of information.
